Recent courtroom drama in Atlanta surrounding rapper Young Thug’s YSL RICO trial took a significant turn after his defense attorney, Brian Steel, was held in contempt by Judge Ural Glanville. Steel accused Judge Glanville and prosecutors of an improper meeting with Kenneth Copeland, a key witness in the case, and was escorted out of the courtroom after refusing to disclose how he learned of the meeting. Glanville sentenced him to spend the next 10 weekends at the Fulton County Jail, totaling 20 days.

Chris Timmons, a former Atlanta-area prosecutor who has known Steel for years, told The Washington Post he was stunned by what happened Monday.

“Brian is one of the most ethical attorneys I know. He is deferential. He is polite, and for him to be held in contempt is crazy,” said Timmons. “This thing is off the rails.”

The case has been marked by significant delays and controversies, further intensified by Steel’s incarceration.
