The Wall Street Journal: He Was Hired by Fani Willis to Prosecute Trump. Now He’s Accused of an Affair With Her.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis faces allegations of an improper romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor she hired to lead the racketeering case against Donald Trump. Despite his lack of felony trial experience, Wade was brought on and has been paid nearly $654,000 by Willis’s office. The allegations, which include claims of financial benefit and misuse of funds, have raised questions as to why Willis sought Wade’s services.

According to a recent motion, he isn’t qualified to serve as a court-appointed defense lawyer in the Trump case, and to pick up such an assignment he needs to have tried at least two criminal trials of similar offenses.

Chris Timmons, an Atlanta defense attorney who has prosecuted cases under the same racketeering law used against Trump, spoke with The Journal regarding Wade’s background, stating his lack of relevant experience “would be concerning in any complex felony case, let alone one that is a multi-defendant RICO case.”

The allegations may prompt investigations by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation or the Georgia Bar Association; however, the allegations of inappropriate relations alone are unlikely to dismiss the case against Trump. If Willis is recused or disqualified, the case might need to be reassigned to another district attorney’s office.
