A Georgia appeals court has disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her office from prosecuting the high-profile election interference case against Donald Trump and 14 others. The court’s decision cited Willis’s romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, an outside attorney she hired to lead the trial team, as creating a conflict of interest that undermines public confidence in the case.
The court ruled 2-to-1 that the disqualification was necessary, though it stopped short of dismissing the case outright. Legal experts, including former Georgia prosecutor Chris Timmons, emphasized the rarity of such a decision.
“It’s extremely rare for an entire office to be disqualified. That just doesn’t happen,” Timmons said.
This development adds significant uncertainty to the case, which already faces hurdles such as Trump’s claims of immunity and potential legal challenges if he returns to the presidency. Willis has said she plans to appeal the ruling to the Georgia Supreme Court.
