In the ongoing, high-profile YSL gang trial, recent plea deals mark a pivotal shift. Chris Timmons, former head of organized crime in DeKalb County, spoke to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) on the implications for the case and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ approach. After nearly a year of proceedings, plea deals accepted this week have reduced the number of defendants by half, signaling a quicker path to conclusion. Timmons observed that the evidence “isn’t coming in like they wanted it to,” and believes Willis will still consider the case a win if these pleas lead to supervision for the remaining defendants.
He emphasized the trial’s length and the unexpected shifts in strategy, underscoring the importance of the DA’s approach to future RICO cases.
“If she hadn’t brought these cases, then these are people who would have been walking around free as opposed to under some sort of supervision for the next several years,” Timmons said.
